I get my watch batteries & repairs done here as well as keys cut

The laundrette was fine, if a bit dated. The lady who I presume ran it, came in towards the end of my drying cycle. We exchanged some words, before our conversation escalated into a discussion of South African politics. She is South African herself. I acknowledged that the country is not in a brilliant state at the moment. She said it was the fault of a black government. I said perhaps they need more politicians like Mandela. She said no, he was a terrorist and killed children in his activities with the ANC. The former is true, as a freedom fighter/terrorist against the SA apartheid government. Whether he killed children and whether this was intentional, I dont know. I said, presumably a lot of blacks were killed in the preceding years/decades. She took this point. She then said blacks cannot govern themselves. I said, clearly there are lots of problems in Africa, and I dont have an exhaustive knowledge of the different countries, but some are better than others. And some are educated to rule in universities in the West. I said I do see Africa as the shadow of the world, because it has so many problems, but it also has great potential as well. She said it is an amazing continent in some ways, but did not think she would see peace or effective black rule in her lifetime. She then asserted that blacks are violent. I said thats racist (obviously any human and group of humans, seen racially, nationally or some other grouping can be violent). She stuck to that perception. I concurred that there was trouble in London with stabbings, often done by black youths. She said that the UK hadnt seen the worst of what was to come with trouble from blacks. I said most immigration was from Europe or the Middle East. She said there are lots of blacks coming in from Africa, they were arriving in Corby and couldnt speak the language. I concurred that there are immigration streams coming from North Africa. (For similar reasons as the Middle East - the region has been destabilised by wars and revolutions provoked or initiated by NATO/Western powers, as well as climate change and economic factors). At this point, the lady was distracted by a couple of elderly customers, and I turned to my drying, and am sure I heard her say gypsies dont collect. I walked away feeling disturbed by the conversation. Not that there wasnt some elements of truth in what she said, but that the whole conversation was underlaid with solid racism, expressed in generalisations and sweeping statements - the sort of which are likely to contribute to self-fulfilling prophecies, if her views spread, and I know she is not alone in having a black and white view of these matters. Ironically, before she arrived, a couple of customers washing in parallel to me, happened to be black. (Note: I dont like the block terms black and white, none of us is entirely black or white, and it is divisive, but using it as a shorthand.) I dont know what people whove lived in the fading dawn of Western colonialism in Africa should do with their experience. They took the land by force, subjugated the indigenous people, built societies and are now unhappy, because they have been pushed aside, to a large extent, by black Africans, re-asserting their right to govern lands which were historically theirs going back millenia. It may well take decades for Africans to evolve towards the kind of democracies that Europe has. And perhaps they will innovate their own versions. I just think people like the lady owner, should use a touch of caution and historical knowledge, when talking about people, see how black experience is heterodox/varies in the UK, and try and encourage those already here to act in constructive ways, rather than damning them all as violent or incapable of self-governance.
